About Alfred's

The Building

Since 1952, the building at 222 West King Street has been woven into the fabric of the West King neighborhood, evolving alongside the community that surrounds it. Best known by many locals as the longtime home of Sailor’s Exchange, the space became a beloved landmark filled with salvaged maritime treasures, local stories, and the unmistakable character that defined “old West King.”

Over the decades, the building has served many purposes, but at its heart it has always been a place where people gathered. During the 1950s, in the era before the Civil Rights Act, the space reportedly operated as a gathering and event venue during a deeply divided period in St. Augustine’s history. Through changing times and many identities, the building has remained tied to the people and culture of West King Street.

Now situated in the center of one of St. Augustine’s most vibrant creative corridors, surrounded by independent businesses, restaurants, and neighborhood staples, the building continues its legacy as a community hub.

Today, Alfred’s aims to carry that spirit forward, creating a space centered around live music, food, art, and connection while honoring the rich history and neighborhood energy that have always made West King Street special.

The Story

But like, who is Alfred?

Before we answer that, we should probably start with Ryan.

Ryan Kunsch is the creative force behind beloved local spots like Sarbez!, Slugs, and Muggsy’s - places built around the simple idea that good food, good drinks, and good company have a way of bringing people together. As a St. Augustine local and family man, Ryan has always approached hospitality with family, community, and connection at the center.

With Alfred’s, the vision was to create something that felt missing from the rapidly growing West King neighborhood: a true gathering space for the people who live here. A place where great food, live music, art, conversation, and community could all exist under one roof.

Designed with a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, Alfred’s was built to support both emerging local artists and nationally touring acts, creating a venue experience unlike anything else in the area while remaining deeply rooted in the neighborhood that surrounds it.

At its core, Alfred’s is about creating the kind of place Ryan wishes existed more often, a place where families can gather for dinner, friends can catch a show, neighbors can run into each other, and adults can enjoy a night out without sacrificing the sense of community that makes a place feel welcoming. Because the truth is, family-friendly and vibrant nightlife don’t have to be opposites. Two things can be true at the same time.

The vision also pushes back against an industry that often feels increasingly disconnected. In a world of ghost kitchens, cookie-cutter concepts, rushed experiences, and spaces designed more for transactions than connections, Alfred’s aims to be something different. A place with soul. A place built to linger. A place where quality matters, conversations happen naturally, and people feel like they belong.

And then there’s Alfred.

Alfred’s is named after Ryan’s grandfather, Alfred “Al” Kunsch, who owned his own pharmacy, Thornhill’s, in Sayville, New York. Al embodied the entrepreneurial spirit, work ethic, and commitment to community that continue to inspire Ryan today. Naming the restaurant after him felt like the perfect way to honor the person who helped shape so much of what Alfred’s stands for.

But no story about Alfred’s would be complete without mentioning Glenn.

While Ryan may be the one dreaming up ideas, Glenn is the foundation that makes those dreams possible. She’s the first person to hear every new idea, every concern, every frustration, every late-night question, and every ambitious plan. While Ryan focuses on building businesses and community spaces, Glenn is often the one keeping everything else moving, supporting the family, raising their children, and providing the encouragement and perspective needed to keep pushing forward.

Together, Glenn and their children are the reason behind it all. They provide the motivation to keep building, the reminder of what really matters, and the inspiration to create spaces that make life a little richer for the people around them.

At the end of the day, Alfred’s isn’t just a restaurant or a music venue. It’s a reflection of the people, values, and community that inspired it. It’s a place built on family, fueled by connection, and created for gathering.

And we can’t wait to share it with you.
